Architect Barbie (still can´t find any Industrial Designer Barbie)

There isn´t any Industrial Designer Barbie… yet ! But we will keep waiting for her. For now, we can all be happy with Architect Barbie :

It even comes with her lovely thick black glasses, blue prints  and a little scale model of her (dream?) house.

The AIA (American Institute of Architects ) and Mattel held a design competition for the architect Barbie, the newest addition to the career-themed “I Can Be” series.  The winner of this Design competition designed a lovely, pink, modern, glass filled and glamorous barbie eco-friendly House : “The four-story Malibu beach house features luxurious open chef’s kitchen, fitness room, and landscaped garden on the rooftop as well as green-lifestyle touches—sourced furniture, solar panels, bamboo flooring, and low flow toilets—throughout the 4,881 square feet. But the fashion-loving doll’s favorite part would be the computerized glass tower closet that runs through all floors”  Read more in this Article of Times online magazine.

Nobody will built this house unless you want to buy the blueprints and do it yourself. Anyhow , we will wait for that to hapen too. 😉

Remember that this week´s Design Challenge theme is Barbie, wait for the results next  Monday and tell us what you think.

The work of Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre

The work of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre leaves me speechless, i have hardly ever seeing this kind of work with other photographers. Ruins in all its splendor.

“Ruins are the visible symbols and landmarks of our societies
and their changes, small pieces of history in suspension.

The state of ruin is essentially a temporary situation that happens at
some point, the volatile result of change of era and the fall of empires.
This fragility, the time elapsed but even so running fast, lead us to watch them one very last time :
being dismayed, or admire, making us wondering about the permanence of things.

Photography appeared to us as a modest way
to keep a little bit of this ephemeral state.” – Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre.

I can hardly call this post about interior design, yet i could´t help to share this photos with you.

Kids Furniture

When I was a kid  my favorite book was Mashenka. I loved the story and the illustrations. I still remember how i felt when i noticed that all the furniture was the perfect size for her, and i always desire to have a bedroom  like hers.  Just like us adults do, kids need chairs, beds and tables suited for their size and age so they can use them as comfortably as we do.

Whenever you think of furnish a room for a kid think always in furniture that will fit the kids needs until certain age, because it is true that they grow really fast. Also, decide whether if you want a decor that will last long enough or just stand until certain stage of their lives, that will give you an idea of what type of color you want on the walls and the type of furniture you are buying for it.

Kids furniture allow you to experiment with all those styles that just never seem right for your age, let lose all your creativity with kids bedrooms, they will thank you for it, specially if you choose furniture that will allow them to create and play with the space and their imagination, here i have a beautiful example from smarin, a french design studio that creates one of the most amazing pieces i have ever seeing :

Last but not least, always allow your kids  to choose their furniture, it was so frustrating for me not to have the last word about it.

Illustrated Guide for Curtain Styles

So , today I´ve decided to give you an illustrated guide for curtain styles. Curtains can be very tricky, we desperatly need them to complete the perfect look in our homes, yet, the wide variety of curtain styles available out there can drive us nuts . With this post you´ll see that it is not so difficult to identify the different types and lines between each style and also impress your friends with your vast knowledge of curtain names !

Louis XIII

Friezes are simple, most fabrics are reused.

Louis XIV

Courtains with baroque style are represented in the Louis XIV type of frieze.

Louis XV

Louis XV curtains are the equivalent to Rococo lines in furniture, but translated into fabric.

Louis XVI

Above all, Louis XVI curtains should maintain symmetry, new shapes , forms and types of draping are found.

Directorio

This particular french curtain style  lasted only a few years. The most important characteristic of this style are the straight and simple lines in the fabrics.

Empire Style

Empire Style curtains are always rich and interesting. Bold and voluminous fabrics are typical of this style.

Biedermeier Style

Biedermeier style curtains are good in entertaining areas.  Always light and enchanting, fabrics used in this particular style have soft colors.

Napoleon III

Napoleon III  curtains  always have an intense decor, with rich fabrics, colors and patterns.

Modern

Modern Style curtains are functional and simple.

Design Challenge : True Blood Season 4 premiere

To honor the True Blood season 4 premiere  we have our new and third design challenge, needless to say that we adore the series, and after almost a year waiting  (waiting SUCKS !) for the 4th season premiere we cannot wait to see the exciting new adventures of our beloved  Sooki Stackhouse, Bill and of course the wonderful Eric ;D

For those addicted to hot vampires, happiness and excitement come together in True Blood season 4,  just released. We have to admit that the synthetic blood idea has its pros and cons, it was the reason that let vampires say  “hey! We exist!! and we don´t need to suck your blood out because we have this tasty beverage”  …yes, sure.

If you are a sincere True Blood fan you know it is not completely true, they enjoy drinking from your hot veins even more. Blame the bottle!!! That way I designed a new one, a bottle more suitable for vampires, big, strong, tough

No need to open the bottle you can stick your fangs in it !

Eric Northman: if you are not in the mood for a True Blood , dinner will be waiting for you tonight all blushed. XOXO Criss

I, on the other hand thought about all those last minute hookups between humans and vampires. What happens the day after ? Your bedroom has not been designed to be totally sealed during daylight. Don´t worry, I came up with a perfect and stylish solution : disposable curtains.  You can cut them  in to the exact size of your window and install them in just a few seconds, just roll out the fabric and stick it to the frame of your window.

Comes in standard sizes : 2.44 x 1.22 , 3.66 x 1.22, 3.66 x 2.44

No need to worry about the sunrise now huh!

Hope you enjoyed this week challenge, see you next Monday  with the News of The World Scandal.

😀

Retro Interiors

I love interior design, makes me think about happy times in family , with friends or even on your own, it doesn´t really matter, the important thing is to have a beautiful and functional space to develop your activities.

Interior design history is something that´s been proven appealing to all of us. I don´t know what it is, the melancholy, the memories or even the idea of living in another era, looking at vintage  interior design pictures evokes something inside of all of us.

World Industrial Design Day

Today, on june 29 of  2011 we celebrate the fourth annual  World Industrial Design Day . Congrats to all the designers out there , and of course congrats to ourselves too !

The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design ( Icsid ) celebrates the day  with a Student Poster Competition : design students from Icsid Member Schools are asked to create a poster that illustrates how industrial design improves the lives of individuals and communities around the world. This year the winner were two students from Chile ( arriba latinoamérica!).

Winning poster by Paula Beatríz Cabrera Osorio and Vania Farías of the Instituto Profesional DuocUC de la Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

Icsid also has a very interesting .PDF document to give 10 ideas on how to celebrate World Industrial Design Day, the cool thing is that includes several activities around the globe.

June 29 is the 180 day of the year (181st in leap years) in the Gregorian Calendar. Such a nice numer isn´t it ?
